This rare and rather handsome Rolex Oyster Athlete watch from the 1940s came in to us recently for a service.
This watch had been very well maintained from new so required a full strip, clean and overhaul to replace the old dry oils and get it back in working order. We refinished and polished the screws as a finishing touch. This watch is from one of or favourite eras of Rolex watchmaking so we were sorry to see this one leave the workshop! We especially likes the gilt printing on the dial and the detail of the bright red centre seconds hand.
The term 'California' dial refers to the top numbers (10, 11, 1 and 2) appearing in Roman numerals and the lower (4, 5, 7 and 8) in Arabic.
